My Approach to Design

I have 6 years of experience as a digital design professional and 3 years of experience teaching design studios at the university level. In that time, I’ve gotten a good grasp on what I can do to ensure a successful project outcome. So, here are some of the foundational principles of how I approach design problems, and some insight on the type of value I hope to bring to your team.

Guided by Research, Understanding and a Clear Goal

Know your audience

I strive to make design decisions based on user research, testing and a thorough understanding of who the design is for. For me, curiosity is key, research is exciting and finding meaningful insights to inform my work is the goal.

Design is problem solving

It’s important for me to get clear about the problem, end-goal and any business objectives before working to find a solution. When handed a project, I do my best to identify the core design problem, then use my UI/UX design skills to solve for it.

Systems Oriented for Sustainable Growth

Design as a system

I believe every project should be a building block contributing to the greater whole. That’s why documenting brand standards and designing with the bigger picture in mind is so important to my process. It makes design worth the investment and helps smooth out the process of scaling.

Building a consistent brand experience

I view design and branding as a whole experience. It takes visual design aligned with thoughtful content structure, reusable design patterns and focused brand messaging to build something truly memorable. And that’s the kind of design I love doing.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

working towards a greater whole

I’ve experienced first hand that when I lean on the team around me, the work is so much bigger and better than something done alone. Whether it’s fellow designers, developers, or content specialists, I find so much value (and I learn a lot of new things!) when working together as a team.

lifelong learning, Teaching and feedback

I’m always looking for ways to learn and grow professionally and personally. And, from my experience teaching, I’ve found it super rewarding to play a part in another person’s growth. Being able to use what you know as a tool to help someone else better their work or life or whatever it may be? That’s pretty cool if you ask me.

What about outside of work?

In my free time you can catch me playing around with my pup, Lola, hanging out with my nephew, or singing at an open-mic. Being a designer makes me feel super fortunate to get to do what I love for a living. So, I make sure that my life outside of work is full of love, too.
